Good Morning, boys and girls! This week I will be teaching our music lessons from my home! We will continue our discussion on Louis Armstrong and hear some more of his music; we are going to learn more about the brass family, and we're going to do some review with the notes on the staff and with rhythms! I will also be posting the responsorial psalm for you to practice and share for your musicianship points or for your star stickers! I'm looking forward to hearing from you this week!

Last week we started talking about Louis Armstrong, a famous Jazz Musician. We learned that Armstrong's main instruments were the trumpet and the cornet. These instruments are known as Brass Instruments. Watch the video on the left to learn what other instruments are known as brass instruments!

Now that we have seen some of the different brass instruments, lets listen to some professional brass players play them all together. The name of this piece is called Flight of the Bumblebee. When you close yours eyes while listening to this piece, can you imagine bumblebees flying around??

Here is a video explaining the differences between a cornet and a trumpet. If you listen to the whole thing, the speaker will show you three different things. Do you think you will be able to remember them?

This an actual performance done by Louis Armstrong when he was alive. At the beginning you will hear him starting to add different notes to the melody while playing his trumpet. (Or is it a cornet? Can you tell?) This is called "improvising". Improvisation is a something that is used often in jazz music. Later in the video, Louis will start singing the song. The lady who is singing in the background will be adding to the song by doing some "scat" singing. Scat singing is a type of improvising where the singer will make up the notes and use nonsense words like "doo wah", or "doo-ba doo- ba". Even though she's singing in the background, try to listen to what she is singing! Doesn't she have an amazing voice?
